FCP7 runs beautifully on the Mac Air. No complaints. (Taken with instagram)
When I first got my Air, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to use it for editing. Sure, I had read reports on how fast it was, but the seemingly underpowered specs made me doubt how effective it would be. Good to see my fears were unfounded.
I had already made some tests with FCP on an Air, but this is the first project with a lot of material that I’m starting on it. I just imported a bunch of footage to it, have synced everything and just started cutting everything into segments. And I still haven’t had any problems (even though the Air doesn’t have FireWire ports, which means I’m stuck with USB 2.0).
I wouldn’t recommend the Air as the main editing machine to anyone, of course. There are limitations. You don’t want to render your work on one, for instance. But if you have editable footage and wants to get a head start on the go, the air is an excellent choice. I’m getting a lot done with it before I get the chance to take it to an iMac.
All in all, I still maintain that the Macbook Air is probably my favorite computer ever. I just love how light and fast it is, and it’s powerful enough to get a lot of work out of the way. I’ll just have to remember to bring a mouse with me next time. Editing on a trackpad is not for me.
